Giant clam

The giant clam is well maned it's the world biggest bivalve it can grow to weight more than 440 pounds (200 kg). a clam this size need lots of food. Up to 99 parent of its diet  consists  of  food produced by  algae  living in its flesh which make  food by photosynthesis. Without  its algae  the clam world die.like other  mollusks the giant  clams body is made  up mainly of muscle and  organs surrounded by tissue. This tissue  called the mantle . The  mantle  not and organ surrounded by tissue. is called the mantle not only contains the  the organs but also starches  out to form body parts  such as the big colorful lips that stick out  of giant clams shell. The mantle also produce  the materials that from the shell.a full- grown giant clams may look as if as it puckering up to give a give a big kiss but its mantle is actually it can shut it shell completely it would t want to anyway is the algae in mantle need sunlight to make food.The algae  live just under the  mantle surface the mantle  which ranges in color from yellow green to blue  and purple is lined with clear patches called windows.The windows help focus sunlight onto the algae people have hervested giant clams for food a long time illegal hunting  however  removed too many giant clams form the wild. as a  result it has become rare and clod became endangered  scientists are  raising  giant clams in captivity to plant coral reefs people in philippines also grow  the big bivalves in clam farm for use as food wich may help reduce how many wild clams are harvested. clams and oysters cover irritating  praticles such as sand with layers of smooth material produced  by the mantle .
