Every year tons and of plastic litter whah into the oceans through rivers and streams. Massive amounts collect the gyres huge revolving water systems in the five major oceans. The most famous one is the  North pacific Gyre where halfway between  California and Hawaii  the plastic  extends over an area twice the size of Texas . The site is nicknamed the great pacific garbage  patch. Dutch teenager Boyan  Slat shocked by the floating plastic he saw while diving in greece decided to  invent a process  to clean up the Garbage  patch. His idea was to build floating barriers anchored deep down the sea bed.The barriers combines  with the ocean's movement would guide the debris toward a platform where it could be removed . Boyan started a foundation called The ocean cleanup raising money to fund  the project and attracting scientists to join him. Boyan hope to have the first platform working by 2020. follow his progress on http://www.theoceancleanup.com  plastic bottles make up about half of the plastic butter that washes out to sea . Even they pieces of plastic act like sponges to soak up harmful chemicals in the water. When birds and fish  eat the pieces they'er eating  chemicals too san Francisco CA has become the first Us city to ban plastic grocery  bags.
