Just call it the incredible shrinking ozone hole for decades theres been a massive hole in the ozone layer that appears over the Antarctic a result of chlorine containing chemicals once used in products like hair spray and refrigerators the depleted ozone region averaged an area of 8.7 million sqare miles (22 million sq km ) in the 1996-2005 period by 2016 the hold had shrunk more than 0.6 miles (1.6 million sq km) about three time the size of frarnce scientist say this is due to the internationl ban on those chemicals in 1987. Whil researchers predict that the hole wont return to 1980 levels until 2070 this is definitely positive news for our plant.
