by 2014  approximately 272 million tones  (300 million US tons) of plastic were consumed worldwide. Of this total polyethylene accented  for around 80 million tonnes (88million US tons) For comparison  in 2012 the weight of the world  adult  population was estimated at 287 million tonnes (316 million US tons).
